Subject and predicate | what is Subject and predicate?

Every sentence have two part: the subject and the predicate. The subject is the first part of sentence. It it’ll us what what the sentences is about.

for example

Ajayita is a teacher of german.
Ajayita’s school is in Bhubaneswar.
Lucky and saumya play chess every evening.

The predicate come after the subject and content of verb.it tell us something about the subject.

Subject :is a first part of the sentence ;tells us what or who the sentence is about.

Subject: form and function

The subject in a sentence usually a noun or noun phrase. Other types of words, when they occur as subject, behave like noun.

Fruits contain vitamins.(noun as subject)
The exercises in the maths textbook are difficult.(noun phrase as subject)
Smoking is banned here. (gerund*as subject)

Imperative sentences Mein appeared to have no subject. That is because the subject in them is you, which is implied, and so it is omitted.
(You) write the heading first.
(You) raise your left leg.
(You) add a little water to the batter.

Questions, or interrogative sentence, do not start with the subject. The subject in question come after the verb that start the sentences.
For example= is Ajayita is teacher of German?
Do lucky and Saumya play chess every evening?
Are the Math exercise difficult?

The subject does not come first in exclamatory sentence either.
For example= how cute the baby is!
What are brave effort!
How great the teachings of Gandhi are!

Predicate: form and function

The predicate must contain our. It can also contain other elements like object, complements or and adverbials all depending on the nature of the verb.
Merin sings. (verb-only predicate)
Merin sings a song. ( predicate with the verb and object.
Neha told us an interesting story. ( predicate with a verb and two object direct:{ an interesting story} and indirect({ua})

  2. WH question these question are formed using question word like what why, when who were and how.
    The reply to them is not a simple yes or no, but one from an open range of responses.

Yes no questions

Yes no questions are usually formed by placing the word before the subject.
Your hand are wet. Are your hand wet?
Ricardo was playing football. Was record of playing football?
Hussain is a painter – is Hussain a painter?

When there is a helping verb in the statement, it question from will have the structure.
Helping verb + object + main verb + other part of the predicate.

When there is no helping verb in the statement, as in sentence in the simple present or the simple past we will need to supply do does or did as shown in the table below.

Simple present

Does + subject + base from of the verb + other part of the predicate.
For example: Suraj make tea. Does Suraj make tea?
The earth goes around the sun. Does the Earth go around the sun?

Simple past

Did + subject + base from the verb + other part of the predicate.
The satellite went around the earth. Did the satellite go around the earth?
You painted the wall. Did you paint the wall?
I feel asleep. Did I fall asleep?

Tag question and question have the nature of yes no question. A tag question is a short question added after a statement. Attack question accept and agree reply from the hearer.

A declarative question is a statement that is focal like a question with a rising tone at the end.
