Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah is set to be the next Karnataka chief minister, according to sources. DK Shivakumar, another contender for the top post, will be offered the deputy chief ministerial post, according to sources. He is expected to get important portfolios in the state Cabinet, sources added. Siddaramaiah’s swearing-in is likely to take place on Thursday. A meeting of all the 135 Congress MLAs is expected to be held on Thursday. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar separately met party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Delhi. Party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said a new Karnataka chief minister will be sworn-in in 24 hours and a new state Cabinet will be in place in 48-72 hours. The Congress secured a resounding victory in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly election, winning 135 of the 224 seats, ousting the BJP from power. The BJP was a distant second with 66 seats and the JD(S), which had hoped to play the kingmaker, was down with just 19 seats. Since then, the party is facing the challenging task of appointing the next chief minister of the state.
